You Thought About Me

The Love Hidden in Consideration

The older I get, the more I believe one of the highest forms of love is consideration. Sacrifice might rank a little higher, but that is a conversation for another day. I am talking about those small moments when somebody shows you that you crossed their mind without asking for their attention. A person can text me all day and tell me how much they miss me. They can say they love me every morning and every night, and I can appreciate those words. But sometimes a simple act of consideration reaches me in a place words cannot touch. Maybe somebody sends me something funny during the day because it reminds them of a conversation we had. Maybe they hear a song and think, Alvin would get a kick out of this. Maybe they are walking through Walmart, come across something they know I would enjoy, and put it in the cart just because they were thinking about me. They are doing it on their own, not because I asked, gave them a hint, or expected anything in return. They are doing it because somewhere in the middle of living their own life, they thought about me.

It Was Never About the Ice Cream

Now suppose somebody pulls up at my house and says, “Guess what I got you.” Naturally, I am going to ask, “What you got?” Then they reach into the bag and pull out my favorite ice cream, and I might have to smile before I can even help myself. Shoot, somewhere in the back of my mind, I might hear Jagged Edge singing about meeting somebody at the altar. I am joking, of course, but there is some truth underneath that laughter. The ice cream might only cost a few dollars, so the money is not what makes the moment valuable. What touches me is knowing that this person remembered what I liked. They were standing in that store, surrounded by hundreds of things and thinking about everything they had to do, yet somehow, in the middle of it all, they thought about me. For one little moment, I mattered enough for them to stop and make a decision based on something they knew about me. That carton of ice cream becomes more than just dessert because it carries a message that money cannot buy. It quietly says, “You were not with me, but I was still thinking about you.”

When Somebody Carries You in Their Mind

There is something deeply human about wanting to know that we matter enough to cross somebody else’s mind. I am not talking about needing constant attention, because grown folks have their own lives and responsibilities. I am talking about those unexpected moments when somebody remembers a small detail you shared weeks or even months ago. Maybe they remember your favorite food, the kind of music you enjoy, or something you mentioned wanting to try. They may remember that you have an important day coming and call just to wish you well. Those little things tell you they were actually listening when you talked. In a world where people can sit right beside you while staring at their phones, having someone truly pay attention to you has become something special. Being remembered makes you feel seen because it shows that your words did not simply pass through somebody’s ears and disappear. Somebody held onto a little piece of what you told them. When they act on that memory later, consideration becomes its own quiet language of affection.

Love Is Often in the Details

I have lived long enough to know that big displays of affection can be beautiful. But the small ways someone shows they care every day tell me even more about a relationship. Anybody can make a grand gesture when the occasion calls for one. Birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, and special celebrations practically announce that something should be done. The real test comes on an ordinary Tuesday when there is nothing to celebrate and nobody is expecting anything special. That is when somebody sees your favorite snack at the store and thinks about bringing it home. That is when they call because they remembered something you told them was happening that day. They might save you a seat because they know where you like to sit or bring you a cup of coffee the way you like it. None of these actions will make the evening news, and they do not need to. Their power comes from the fact that nobody had to remind the person to care. Consideration says, “I pay attention to you because you matter in my life.” Sometimes those small acts tell the story of love better than the biggest words ever could.

Consideration Goes Both Ways

Of course, consideration cannot be something I only expect other people to give me. If I appreciate being remembered, I have to remember people too. Love becomes healthier when everybody involved is paying attention instead of one person doing all the giving. I should know what brings the people I care about joy, just as I hope they learn those things about me. I should remember important moments in their lives and recognize when they might need encouragement. Sometimes consideration means buying something, but most of the time it does not cost a dime. It can mean calling somebody after an appointment because you remembered they were nervous about it. It can mean saving them a piece of cake because you know that is the part they like. It can mean noticing that somebody has gotten unusually quiet and asking whether everything is all right. Those actions require us to look beyond ourselves long enough to recognize another person’s needs and feelings. That is where consideration begins to look a whole lot like love.

Summary

Consideration is one of those quiet expressions of love that can easily be overlooked. It does not always arrive with flowers, expensive gifts, or dramatic declarations. Sometimes it comes home in a Walmart bag carrying your favorite ice cream. The object itself may be small, but the thought behind it can carry real emotional weight. Somebody remembered something about you when you were nowhere around. They took that memory and turned it into an action. That action tells you that your presence continues to matter even in your absence. It also shows that they listen closely enough to remember the little things. Most of us want that feeling whether we admit it or not. We want to know that somebody thought about us simply because we mattered to them. Sometimes love is nothing more complicated than being remembered at the right moment.

Conclusion

At the end of the day, most of us want to know we crossed somebody’s mind. We want to feel remembered without always having to remind people that we are here. Words of love matter, and I would never say they do not. But words become stronger when everyday actions stand behind them. Consideration gives love something solid to stand on. It shows attention, memory, care, and effort working together. That favorite ice cream was never really about ice cream in the first place. It was about somebody knowing what made me smile and remembering it when I was not around. That little gesture quietly said, “You matter to me even when you are not standing in front of me.” There is something mighty comforting about knowing you can occupy a small corner of somebody’s thoughts while they are out there living their own life. Sometimes the sweetest words you will ever hear are never spoken at all: you crossed my mind, so I thought about you.
