The Ancient Fascination With Other Worlds
Human beings have been imagining other worlds for thousands of years. Long before telescopes, particle accelerators, or modern physics, ancient civilizations wondered about worlds beyond their own. It is an exciting question, but excitement should not be confused with evidence.
What a Portal Meant to Ancient People
To understand ancient gateways, I first have to resist interpreting them through twenty-first-century eyes. A doorway could carry enormous symbolic meaning without being a physical machine. Crossing a threshold might represent leaving ordinary life and entering sacred space. A circle could symbolize the sun, eternity, completeness, divine authority, or the repeating cycles of nature. If I look at an ancient carving and immediately see a technological portal, I may be placing my imagination onto theirs.

Their gates function within religious and mythological stories. That distinction matters. Myth does not mean meaningless or foolish. Myths can preserve profound ideas about mortality, authority, nature, suffering, morality, and the unknown. But finding a gateway in mythology is not evidence that Mesopotamian engineers knew how to create a wormhole.

Ancient Egyptian religion provides another fascinating example. The Duat was an otherworldly realm closely associated with death, transformation, and the journey of the sun god. The dead required knowledge to navigate what awaited them. To a modern reader, descriptions of passing through gates into another realm can sound almost like science fiction. But within Egyptian religion, these images were connected with death, rebirth, cosmic order, and the continuation of existence. Archaeologists have discovered extraordinary Egyptian engineering, mathematics, architecture, and astronomical knowledge, but they have not discovered equipment demonstrating that Egyptians were opening physical gateways into another dimension.
Why Similar Stories Appear Around the World
The fact that different civilizations developed stories about other worlds is genuinely interesting, but it does not necessarily mean they all inherited the same forgotten technology. Human beings everywhere confront similar mysteries. We dream. We experience birth and death. We look at the night sky. We wonder where people go when they die. We experience altered states of consciousness, visions, religious experiences, and events we cannot immediately explain. It is therefore not surprising that societies separated by enormous distances developed ideas about heavens, underworlds, spirit realms, and boundaries between them. A doorway is also one of the most natural human symbols for transition because we physically walk through doors every day. Moving from one world into another is easily imagined as crossing a threshold.

Inside the accelerator, scientists accelerate beams of particles to extremely high energies and bring them into collision. Sophisticated detectors then record what emerges. By studying those collisions, physicists can investigate fundamental particles and the forces governing matter. The LHC helped scientists confirm the existence of the Higgs boson in 2012, an achievement that strengthened our understanding of the Standard Model of particle physics. The machine was built to investigate nature at extremely small scales, not to create a doorway through which human beings or supernatural entities can travel.

Scientists sometimes explain that particle collisions recreate conditions similar to those existing shortly after the Big Bang. That description can sound frightening if misunderstood. CERN is not recreating the Big Bang itself or producing another universe inside a tunnel beneath Europe. The significance of the accelerator is that scientists can create controlled conditions, surround the collision points with sophisticated detectors, and carefully analyze the results. It is less like opening another universe and more like using an extraordinarily powerful microscope to investigate the basic structure of ours.
What Scientists Mean by Extra Dimensions
This is where language can become misleading. When physicists discuss extra dimensions, they are not necessarily talking about another universe resembling a room we could enter. Certain theoretical models propose additional spatial dimensions that may be hidden, compactified, or otherwise inaccessible at ordinary scales. Scientists have considered whether high-energy particle experiments could produce measurable signatures consistent with some of these theories. If such evidence were discovered, it would be revolutionary. But detecting evidence of an additional dimension would not mean CERN had opened a portal into it. Scientists look for unusual patterns in particle collisions that might indicate physics beyond the Standard Model. They search for new particles, investigate dark-matter candidates, study antimatter, examine the Higgs field, and test theoretical predictions. If an experiment revealed evidence consistent with extra dimensions, scientists would analyze and attempt to reproduce the measurements. Nobody would be standing beside a glowing doorway waiting to see what walked through.
Why the LHC Can Look Like an Ancient Symbol
Images of the Large Hadron Collider can certainly look mysterious. The detectors are enormous, circular, highly complex structures filled with layers of machinery. If someone places a photograph of an LHC detector beside an ancient circular carving, visual similarities can appear striking. But resemblance alone is weak evidence of historical connection. Human beings repeatedly create circular structures because circles are useful in engineering, architecture, astronomy, art, and religion. Wheels are circular. Clocks are circular. Domes, astronomical instruments, ceremonial rings, and particle accelerators can all involve circular geometry for completely different reasons. Two objects looking similar does not establish that one civilization possessed the technology represented by the other.
Could Wormholes Exist?
Modern physics contains another concept that makes the portal idea difficult to dismiss entirely as imagination: the wormhole. Certain solutions to Einstein’s equations allow mathematical structures resembling shortcuts through space-time. In popular culture, these become gateways that allow someone to enter at one location and emerge somewhere unimaginably distant. The mathematics is fascinating, but there is currently no evidence that traversable wormholes exist in nature or that human beings know how to create one. Keeping a hypothetical wormhole open could require physical conditions or forms of matter that we do not know how to produce. The fact that an idea is mathematically possible under certain assumptions does not mean engineers can build it.
Ancient Knowledge Should Not Be Underestimated
Rejecting claims about ancient portal technology does not require treating ancient civilizations as primitive or unintelligent. Quite the opposite. Egyptians, Mesopotamians, Africans, Greeks, Indians, Chinese, Maya, and other civilizations developed sophisticated knowledge in mathematics, medicine, astronomy, engineering, agriculture, architecture, navigation, and philosophy. Some achievements remain astonishing even by modern standards. We diminish those people when we assume their accomplishments require secret futuristic technology to become impressive. Human ingenuity, organization, observation, labor, and accumulated knowledge can explain extraordinary achievements without inventing machinery for which archaeology has produced no evidence. Ancient people were intelligent enough to deserve being understood on their own terms.
Myth and Science Ask Different Questions
I do not believe we have to choose between respecting ancient spiritual traditions and respecting modern science. They often address different kinds of questions. Ancient mythology asked what existence means, what happens after death, how human beings relate to forces greater than themselves, and what lies beyond the visible world. What If We Eventually Discover Something Extraordinary?
I also believe intellectual humility requires leaving room for discovery. Science has repeatedly shown humanity that reality is stranger than previous generations imagined. Future discoveries may again change our understanding of reality. Perhaps physics will eventually demonstrate that additional dimensions exist. Perhaps our understanding of space-time will become radically different. But if that happens, evidence will have to lead us there. I do not need to declare an extraordinary idea impossible merely because it sounds strange. At the same time, I should not declare it true simply because I find it fascinating.
The Real Mystery Is Already Extraordinary
Sometimes I think our desire for a sensational mystery prevents us from appreciating the genuine mystery directly in front of us. Human beings have built a machine nearly seventeen miles around that can accelerate particles to almost the speed of light and examine events occurring at scales far beyond ordinary perception. Scientists can use those collisions to investigate conditions connected with the earliest moments of the universe. That is astonishing without adding secret portals. Ancient civilizations looked into the heavens and created stories attempting to understand what existed beyond the world they could see. Thousands of years later, we are still asking a version of the same question, only now we have particle detectors, space telescopes, mathematics, and experimental physics helping us investigate it.
